Job Description

Role Overview:

The Substitute Teacher supports classrooms across all age groups (0–6 years) and ensures that high-quality care and learning continue when regular classroom teachers are absent. This flexible role requires strong adaptability, effective communication, and the ability to follow established routines, lesson plans, and safety practices. Substitute Teachers play a vital role in maintaining consistency and creating a warm, engaging environment for children.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide reliable classroom coverage for absent teachers in infant, toddler, and preschool rooms.
  • Follow lesson plans, routines, and procedures provided by the Lead Teacher or classroom team.
  • Maintain classroom expectations for safety, supervision, and engagement.
  • Support children during daily routines including meals, diapering/toileting, transitions, and rest time.
  • Facilitate play-based learning, group time, activities, and outdoor exploration.
  • Use positive behavior guidance and supportive communication strategies.
  • Maintain open, respectful communication with staff and families as needed.
  • Assist with basic documentation such as attendance or notes when requested.
  • Uphold cleanliness and help reset the classroom at the end of the day.
  • Model professionalism and follow all center policies and licensing regulations.

Health, Safety & Licensing Compliance:

  • Maintain active supervision at all times.
  • Adhere to Title 22 staffing standards and safety requirements.
  • Follow all diapering, sanitation, handwashing, and hygiene procedures.
  • Report safety concerns, incidents, or unusual behaviors promptly.
  • Participate in safety drills and follow emergency procedures.
  • Respect confidentiality and mandated reporting laws.

Collaboration & Professionalism:

  • Build positive working relationships with all classroom teams.
  • Adapt to different teaching styles, classroom cultures, and age-group needs.
  • Communicate classroom updates or concerns to the Lead Teacher or Director.
  • Participate in training, meetings, and professional development as required.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, reliability, and a positive, team-oriented attitude.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with children ages 0–6 in a licensed childcare or preschool setting preferred.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new environments and routines.
  • Strong communication and classroom management skills.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
  • Understanding of early childhood development and developmentally appropriate practices.

Physical Requirements (ADA-Compliant):

  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs occasionally.
  • Frequent bending, standing, kneeling, and floor interaction.
  • Ability to move safely through classrooms and playground environments.
  • Reasonable accommodations available upon request.
